Dry Shampoo Review

Recently I visited a TJ Maxx in my area, which I don’t normally do, to check out the hair and beauty products. A friend had mentioned that it was possible to find Amika products there. While I was hoping to get the Amika dry shampoo I  found a few other options.

Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo – This very large bottle I bought at Target for about $5. It smells great, leaves no residue and really leaves my hair feeling clean. This was my first time trying anything by the brand and I am very happy I tried this one!

Batiste Dry Shampoo, blush – I found this at TJ Maxx for about $5 when at Ulta it’s $7.99. I’ve heard this brand is a cult favorite, but out of these three it was not my favorite. It worked but not as well as I expected. The blush scent I wasn’t sold on either.

Macadamia Professional Volumizing Dry Shampoo – I had high hopes for this one because of the high price tag, $25 or about $15 at TJ Maxx, and because I have sampled the Healing Oil Spray thanks to Birchbox and loved it. Unfortunately it was a bust. The formula made my hair very sticky and oily – so not clean feeling at all. I do not recommend this one at all.

Overall the cheap Target buy from Not Your Mother’s is the winner! I would buy this one again and again. I’ll keep searching for that Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo though because it is also a winner.

Love, Riffraff

Riffraff is a fun clothing website with a wide variety of brands and styles. Their original boutique location is in Arkansas but they recently opened one in Dallas. They have a monthly service called Love, Riffraff where for $50 you get one mystery clothing item and an accessory. I decided to give it a try and am glad I did!

A floral affair top – This top is perfect! I love the dove gray/light blue color, the flattering drapey fit, and the details like the notch on the sleeves or the keyhole back. I already wore it to my first day at my new job at Anthropologie! The only downside is that it’s made of rayon (very similar to linen) so it wrinkles extremely easily.

A floral affair necklace, mint – This matches so well with the top and I don’t have anything like it. I like the style and the gold tone. They hit it out of the park with this one!

I would definitely purchase Love, Riffraff again – their April package is available now! You can use my friend Lauren Spann’s code “RiffraffRepLauren” to save 15% on any purchase, and there is always free shipping. That means you get two great items for less than $50! I say go ahead and treat yo self.

February Birchbox

This month was a hit and miss for me, but one full size product was a standout!

Coola Face SPF 30 Unscented Matte Tint – Can’t say I loved this. It is similar in my opinion to Dr. Brandt Pores No More Pore Refiner Primer, which I think just feels too oily on my face. I like that it has SPF but that’s about it. It really has no tint at all so I was using it under my foundation. I would rather use a moisturizer with SPF.

Harvey Prince Sincerely – I might be in the minority on this but I don’t like any fragrance I have received from Harvey Prince. This one was just way too floral and made me sneeze.

photo 3-51

Marcelle Gentle Makeup Remover For Sensitive Eyes – This was my sample pick because it’s always good to have a travel makeup remover on hand. It ended up not being so great though – very oily feeling and I felt like I needed to rinse my eyes afterward. I like the Klorane eye makeup remover much more.

Amika Nourishing Mask – After I tried their amazing dry shampoo, this was a brand I wanted more of. I was very happy to see this hair mask in my box. I haven’t gotten to try it yet but will soon!

Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner – I was so excited to see this full size liner! It had actually been on my wishlist for a while. It has a felt pen tip and can go on thick or thin. It is very easy to apply, and stayed on great! This one is a winner.

February Julep Maven

February’s Maven box was the Afterglow Collection – I thought it had a great mix of colors. The new beauty products for the month were a powder hilighter and a undereye cream hilighter. I really love Julep because you can customize the box to get exactly what you want. Here’s what I picked out!

As usual they included a coupon to use on full price purchases (sad you can’t use these in the secret store!).

Hartleigh – holographic heart glitter top coat, this was free for all Mavens! I was so happy to get this! What a fun polish for Valentine’s day or any day. There is pink, red and white glitter with little hearts. It looks so beautiful.

Becky – oil slick duo chrome silk, this polish is so fun! Sometimes it looks purple, sometimes teal, and then also gray. Very unusual color.

Hazel – wild violet and bronze duochrome, this is so gorgeous too! I’m a sucker for a purple.

photo 2-53

Illume Face and Eye Brightener, Champagne – this is a lightweight eye illuminator that helps cover dark circles. The color isn’t 100% right for me but I still like it. I think it is a good hilighter. It is similar to a eye BB cream I have by Smashbox except without SPF and more shimmer.

Neither color matches super great, but I think I like the Julep one more. Both have a twist up application with a nail polish like end.

That’s it for this month! If you want to sign up for Julep Maven you can do that here!

Golden Tote Mystery Tote 2015

This was my first time purchasing something from Golden Tote and I was pleasantly surprised! For those of you who don’t know about Golden Tote, it is not a subscription service but a clothing package you purchase each month. The first Monday of every month the totes go on sale. You can pick from a $49 tote with 2-3 pieces of clothing or the $149 with 5-6 items. You pick 1-2 items in your size and the rest are a surprise! They carry cute boutique brands, one of which is sold at Anthropologie. Overall you are getting items at a deep discount.

Once a year they do a complete mystery bag with 4 items for $60. I decided to go for it! It is actually still available if you want one. The items might be different but all will include a Puella item. And they always come in a cute reusable fabric tote bag!

I LOVE this gray drapey pocket tee. It is so soft, swingy and perfect. It has a v neck line and a long hemline so it is very flattering. I have worn it several times because it is so versatile!

photo 2-48

The moment I saw this I knew it wasn’t for me. The front is sheer with all different patterns. It is a dolman style with a banded bottom and all gray jersey fabric back. It’s just not my style and I am trying to swap it but haven’t had any luck yet.

photo 4-40

This is another item I love! This is by Golden Tote’s private label called Cut + Sew and it is so comfy. It is black with white stripes and has a tent shape. It’s very versatile for all seasons and looks great belted too.

photo 4-42

This is the promised Puella item that a lot of people got. I like it but I’m not crazy about it. It is a cream light weight knit, has long sleeves, and is very see through. My favorite thing about it is the silhouette – a very swingy tunic. I decided to punch it up with a scarf when I first wore it because it needed some color!

photo 3-44

Looks better, right? I’m happy that 3/4 items were winners for me in this mystery tote. I like Golden Totes selection of items and if I have some extra cash would buy a tote in the future!

Christmas Beauty Presents

My family obviously knows I love beauty products – there were quite a few on my wish list. Here’s the ones I got for Christmas.

photo 3-41 photo 4-36

Beauty Blender – They sell this on Birchbox and at Sephora and I had been hearing a lot of hype about it so it was at the top of my list. My future sister-in-law who also loves beauty products got it for me. Previously I had only used my fingers to apply liquid foundation – never a sponge. You wet this one, squeeze out the water, apply the foundation to the sponge then stipple all over your face to get an even, airbrush like application. The thing is you have to wash it out after each use or else it will stain. Overall I like it and I get better coverage, but there are a few downsides. It takes longer to do my makeup because I have to wash it after. I also tried using normal soap to clean it but that didn’t work – I used the special blender cleanser that came with it and it worked much better but not every stain has come out. And when I squeeze it after washing lots of pink dye goes down the drain which makes me wonder what I’m putting on my face.

photo 1-51

Fossil 1954 Perfume – I smelled this several months ago in the store and was hooked! It’s a sweet and spicy floral combination that is very unique. It has scents of mandarin blossom, pink pepper, ginger, rose, white freesia and Texas cedar. The bottle is also made of gorgeous cut glass. My family was so sweet that I got TWO! One large and one travel size.

photo 2-50

Mally Beauty Evercolor Starlight Waterproof Eye Liner – I love this set of 5 liners from Mally – I had never tried them before but they are on Birchbox. They came in a pretty gold snakeskin printed case with a sharpener. The pencil really does have a great staying power and all the colors are pretty except the rose gold which I have learned just doesn’t show up on my skin color. I would recommend these!

photo 3-46

OPI 10 Pack of Style – This is a mini polish collection based on Coca-Cola. It has several classic colors like red, silver and pink and then some more interesting colors like green and black cherry. A top coat and nail strengthener were a great addition. I like mini polishes because it is hard to use up a full bottle.

photo 4-41

Laura Geller Spackle Eyelid Invisible Eye Primer – This is a great brand I know they sell at lots of different retailers. This stuff really works! It’s not greasy at all or colored, goes on smooth and helps the shadow stick!

photo 1-52

Bath and Body Works Sugar Plum Dream Body Scrub and Ultra Shea Body Cream – Raise your hand if you’re also obsessed with products from Bath and Body Works. Yep I thought so. I’ve actually never tried their body scrub before but I know I love the body cream. This scent is also not too holiday which I like.

I also got an awesome box of Lush goodies from my husband that I forgot to take a picture of. If you’ve never been to one of their stores – they smell AMAZING! All of their products are hand made out of fresh ingredients. I got hooked on their bath bombs last year and have been trying more of their products. My sampler box came with a bear bath bomb, Honey Trap lip balm, a soap, Hot Toddy shower gel, and Sympathy for the Skin body lotion (smells like banana and vanilla!). I highly recommend going to the store to try out some things – they are good about giving free samples. I also recommend their gift boxes for trying a bunch of new things! I also got my husband the R&B hair moisturizer for his beard. It smells so good and fruity and helps to soften and tame his huge beard. Next I can’t wait to get him Kalamazoo – a face wash for beards!
